Após concerto com bilhetes esgotados em 2020, o cantor, guitarrista e compositor cubano Eliades Ochoa está de volta a Lisboa. Mundialmente conhecido e amado como um dos membros originais do Buena Vista Social Club, Ochoa empresta sua voz ao icônico tema de abertura do álbum, “Chan Chan”. O célebre cantor cubano é conhecido pelos seus traços rústicos, seu chapéu característico e pelas botas de cowboy e a icônica imagem de “homem de negro” e é frequentemente chamado de “Johnny Cash de Cuba”. 
 
Em seu mais recente trabalho “Guajiro” (Camponês), Ochoa mostra seu estilo e som únicos, enraizados na tradição cubana, mas com um apelo tão atemporal quanto universal. La storia del progetto Buena Vista Social Club è ormai leggendaria: nel 1996 Ry Cooder e Juan de Marcos Gonzalez radunano un gruppo di musicisti, celebri negli anni ’40-’50 e per lo più dimenticati, portando alla ribalta le sonorità tradizionali come son, bolero e danzón. Tra loro c’è Eliades Ochoa, già affermato con il Cuarteto Patria e considerato oggi uno dei grandi della musica cubana, noto come il “Johnny Cash cubano” per il suo stile. Nato vicino a Santiago de Cuba, ha iniziato giovanissimo a suonare la chitarra, costruendo una carriera che lo ha portato a collaborazioni prestigiose e alla vittoria di due Grammy. La sua voce e la sua chitarra sono tra gli elementi distintivi del successo del Buena Vista. Nel 2019 gli è stato dedicato un documentario, e nel 2023 ha pubblicato il nuovo album Guajiro, che celebra ancora una volta l’anima profonda della musica cubana.

Eliades Ochoa, one of the most renowned Cuban “soneros” of all time, takes the stage of Hoover Auditorium during Lakeside’s Global Music Weekend at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. A Pre-Concert Talk with Kathryn Metz will prepare listeners to understand and enjoy the evening concert more fully at 6:15 p.m. in Orchestra Hall.

Ochoa started his career in 1969 and is a notable defender of traditional Cuban music. His distinctive cowboy hat and his penchant for wearing black have led some to call him “The Cuban Johnny Cash.”

His musical style is due to his place of origin, the Cuban countryside, the anecdotes he listened to, the “guateques campesinos,” and a series of other elements that marked him and made him the artist he is today.

Ochoa’s album, Sublime Ilusión, was nominated for a Grammy as Best Traditional Tropical and Latin Album. Tributo al Cuarteto Patria is an album that recognizes Pancho Cobas, founder of Cuartero Patia, and the troubadours and composers who have inspired Ochoa’s career. With this album, Ochoa was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Traditional Tropical and Latin Performance.

In 2010, he recorded the album Afrocubism accompanied by his group Patria and musicians from Mali. This project gave way to the Buena Vista Social Club. National Geographic recognized this album as the best album of the world that year, and in 2012 it was nominated for an American Grammy.

In 2012, he released the album Un Bolero Para Ti, where he delighted his audience with sublime melodies and won four Latin Grammys.
